Cleaning Tools
Floor Cleaning
Vacuum cleaners are a must-have for anyone serious about getting their home clean. I recommend several in this product guide that range in price and features. Most of the time, a broom is not going to cut it when you need a good cleaning, so a vacuum can be your best friend for on your journey to a truly clean home. If you’re in the market for a new one, sales are often held in the Spring during the months of March-May.
Kenmore BC3005 Series Pet Friendly Lightweight Bagged Canister Vacuum
The Kenmore Lightweight Bagged Canister Vacuum is always a winner in my book. I have them in my home and have purchased several for my business. Kenmore canister vacuums have won my respect over 28 years in the cleaning business. This vacuum, regardless of the model, is a workhorse. The option in the link provided has all of the features I think are important in a vacuum cleaner and that I describe as criteria to look for in my book, Get Your House Clean Now: The Home Cleaning Method Anyone Can Master. It has a telescoping wand, a longer retractable cord, HEPA filter and a true powerhead that runs on electricity rather than suction (don’t get those!). The only thing I don’t like about this vacuum is the attachments. In recent years, Kenmore has switched up their hard floor attachment and it isn’t an improvement. I always purchase the older model of hard floor attachment because it’s more durable and actually gets into corners and clings properly to the floor without attaching itself through suction.
Trust me. If you purchase this vacuum, you will have better luck with an older style (and backward compatible) hard floor attachment.
Shark NV356E 31 Navigator Lift-Away Professional Upright Vacuum
I have never used an upright vacuum regularly as they feel very heavy to me. But I realize that many people prefer an upright over a canister vacuum, so I’ve tested several in the homes I’ve cleaned and the Shark Navigator Lift-Away takes the Get Your House Clean Now award for upright vacuums. Whether you’re cleaning up pet hair in your own home or using this vacuum in your cleaning business, this one is powerful and flexible to get to hard to reach places.
Shark HV322 Rocket Pet Plus Corded Stick Vacuum
I love the Shark Rocket! This stick vac is perfect for small apartments whole floor cleaning or in larger homes when you want something powerful and lightweight to keep in a closet (maybe upstairs?) so you don’t have to lug your primary vacuum from place to place for smaller messes. We have one in our small cottage and it’s perfect for keeping this space clean. It even has a 5-year warranty for in-home use (not commercial) and we have used the warranty, so I know they stand by it.
Shark IZ682H Vertex Pro Cordless Stick Vacuum
The Shark Vertex is so versitile it demands a higher price. This is the most expensive of the vacuums I recommend here, but if you require a lightweight, easy to store, multi-function cordless and bagless vacuum cleaner, this vacuum beats Dyson every time. I’ve never had good luck with Dyson vacuums. While they brag about powerful suction and durability, in my experience, the motor wears out too quickly and they get clogged often. The Shark Vertex is a terrific alternative and a bit lower in price than the Dyson average. I love how the wand bends to allow for cleaning under furniture easily (a must!). It’s so convenient that it can convert into a hand vac easily and that the handle bends over for easy storage in a corner or closet.
Libman Tornado Mop Plus Refills Kit
The Libman Tornado Mop is the most durable mop I’ve ever used. It has a removable string mop head that can be taken off and washed in a linen bag. It allows you to wring the mop out with each dip in the bucket. (Note: The mop head must be put in a linen bag before washing in the machine because it will become tangled and unusable if you don’t.) Replacement mop heads are available in most grocery and big-box stores and the handle often lasts for over a year, even with daily use.
O-Cedar EasyWring Microfiber Spin Mop & Bucket Floor Cleaning System
The O-Cedar Spin Mop is a very good alternative to the Libman Tornado Mop. This product includes a bucket with a squeezing mechanism to remove much of the water in the mop for easy, streak-free floor cleaning. Durable, washable replacement pads are available so you can have an extra on hand in case one gets too dirty to use. These can easily be used for sparkling clean walls and molding as well.
Surface Cleaning
Qisuma 4 Pack Thickening Microfiber Cleaning Cloth, All-Purpose Cleaning Towels
These Qisuma Thickening Microfiber Cleaning Cloths are the best I’ve found yet. They are SO soft and just a bit thicker and more durable than any others I’ve used. I keep a stack of these in my home and in my business. They’ve been washed/sanitized time and time again, remain intact, and still clean without streaks. If there could be a “luxurious” cleaning cloth, this would be it! 🙂
Zwipes 735 Microfiber Towel Cleaning Cloths, 12 Pack
For tough jobs that you need throw-away rags for, Zwipes fit the bill. These come in a 12-pack so they are great for tough outdoor or grimy indoor jobs that you know will ruin your rags, so why use the good stuff like the Qisuma cloths mentioned above? Have a stack of Zwipes on hand in your home, garage, or business.
Ostrich Feather Duster
Since I began my cleaning business nearly 30 years ago, I have always kept an Ostrich Feather Duster in my cleaning bag. For delicate areas that you need to free from dust, but don’t want to chance moving and shifting items often, a feather duster can be a great tool. This duster on Amazon is the fullest and most durable father duster style I’ve found. This duster can even be rinsed out and left to dry, surprisingly returning to it’s fluffy figure. I’ve tried feather dusters found at big box stores that start with W or T, but none have stood up like this one I’ve found on Amazon.
Scotch-Brite 21 Pack Non-Scratch Scrub Sponges
Scotch-Brite Non-Scratch Sponges are the only sponges I’ve found that don’t scratch. They protect surfaces (and cookware) even during the toughest cleaning jobs. I keep these on hand for work, home, and even in rental properties we supply. Don’t let the fact that they’re non-scratch lead you to believe that they’re delicate! They last a really long time, especially if you sanitize them regularly. If you’re using them in your business, consider using the microfiber cloths shared above for regular cleaning, so you can wash and reuse them without waste. Sponges are best for tough jobs and scrubbing tasks so you can toss them out when finished. No cleaning client wants you to use dirty sponges on their kitchens and bathrooms. Luckily, these sponges are affordable to buy in bulk.
Scotch-Brite Stainless Steel Scrubber
These are useful for cleaning aluminum pots and other surfaces that call for them. Test a small area first and do not scrub vigorously without testing it first. They are made to last and won’t rust, plus they’re safe to use on items such as stainless steel cookware, pots, pans, grills, and broilers.
Dawn Poly Mesh Scrubber
Dawn makes a plastic alternative to the stainless steel scrubber above. I use these in my kitchen and they work great and last a long time. They also don’t rust 🙂
Miscellaneous Cleaning Tools
Holikme 2 Piece Dryer Vent Cleaner Kit
This product is new on my list of must-have tools for cleaning. I have struggled with makeshift hoses to clean dryer vents for years and this product is the answer I’ve been looking for! Use this hose attachment on the end of your vacuum hose to clean out your dryer vent through the often narrow slot where the lint trap sits. You won’t believe all of the lint that’s lingering in your vent! This is a fire-hazard, so please do yourself a favor and get one of these now and let me know how much lint you catch.
Winco PPL-3R Cleaning Bucket, 3-Quart
A small cleaning bucket is a great staple to have in your cleaning supplies. You will appreciate having a small bucket to take along for tasks you need to rinse your cloth for over and over. This bucket is the most durable one I’ve found for this purpose. I’ve used it for over 10 years!
Playtex Living Reuseable Rubber Cleaning Gloves
If you dislike getting your hands dirty, rubber gloves will help you clean faster. You will be less inhibited while cleaning bathrooms or other tough messes if you’re using them. Be sure to wear them when scrubbing and washing to protect your hands if your skin is bothered by harsh chemicals. If you have sensitive skin, they are also latex free.
Zippered Mesh Laundry Bags For Washing Mop Heads
Large Storage Totes
This is a great size to use for sorting and storing your items when cleaning your clutter. These are readily available at big box stores.
Extra Large Heavy Duty Storage Bags for Moving and Storage
I also love these large moving bags for storing and moving items. I do a switch each fall and spring to keep only the clothes I’ll wear in my closet and dresser for each type of weather. These are great for storing off-season items in the attic , basement, garage, or other storage areas. You can even label them with a Sharpie (and clean it off later with a magic sponge or a microfiber cloth).
Chef’s Planet 401 Nonstick Toaster Oven Liner
A non-stick toaster oven liner is a terrific tool that can save so much time by not scrubbing the tray of your toaster oven. It’s easy to cut to size and lasts a really long time. Food rarely sticks to it and it washes really easy in hot, soapy water.
Cleaning Products
Bar Keepers Friend Powder Cleanser
Bar Keeper’s Friend is the product I use most in my home and business. It cleans everything! And it doesn’t scratch surfaces when used with a non-scratch sponge or a microfiber cloth (linked above). I’ve used this on so many surfaces including glass, stoves, stainless steel, porcelain, painted walls, fiberglass, you name it! I’ve had success removing stains and scuffs with Bar Keeper’s Friend. This is a must-have in your cleaning caddy.
Scrub Free Bathroom Cleaner with Oxi Clean
Scrub Free Bathroom Cleaner with Oxi Clean is the best, by far, of any of the bathroom cleaners I’ve ever used. It will make your tubs, showers, sinks, toilets, and fixtures shine. It’s perfect for really tough soap scum and water stains and regular maintainance too. I’ve used the same product in my home and in my cleaning business for about 15 years.
Dawn Ultra Dishwashing Liquid
A grease-cutting dish detergent, like Dawn or Palmolive, will go a long way to helping you keep your kitchen and appliances clean. Used full strength on really greasy messes to help break it down, this product will make your job much easier in the long run. Diluted in hot/warm water or with other products like vinegar and lemon juice, dish detergent can help maintain your greasy and grimy areas much more easily. You’ll find my recipe for an all-purpose household cleaner using Dawn Ultra Dishwashing Liquid in my book, Get Your House Clean Now: The Home Cleaning Method Anyone Can Master.
Clorox Clean-Up Bleach Cleaner Spray
Clorox Clean-Up works wonders to cut grease, clean grime, and get stains out of white surfaces such as sinks and counter tops. A terrific product to have around. Be cautious of clothing and other items you don’t want ruined. This product contains bleach and will remove the color from certain items.
Glass Plus Glass Cleaner
Glass Plus is one of my favorite glass cleaners. It smells great and gets glass clean without streaks. A liquid glass cleaner for any glass or mirror cleaning.
Sprayway 443331 Ammonia Free Glass Cleaner
I use Sprayway Glass Cleaner for many glass cleaning needs. It works really well, has no ammonia, and leaves no streaks. It also has a pleasant smell. I often use it for all finishing work on glass and mirrors.
Lysol Sanitizing and Disinfecting Multi-Surface Cleaner
While I use Scrub Free to spray directly on surfaces for cleaning in the bathroom, I use this product, diluted in a bucket of warm or hot water to rinse my sponge or micro-fiber cloth in between wiping different areas around the home as it kills 99.9% of germs. The Cool Adirondak scent is my favorite and clients have raved about how clean their home smell
Pine-Sol All Purpose Cleaner, Original Pine Scent
Pine Sol can be used in the same way as the Lysol Cleaner listed above, except that it isn’t a disinfectant. It can deoderize though and it works great for washing floors and is safe on wood.
Lime-A-Way Rust and Lime Remover
Lime-Away spray cleaner is great to have on hand if you regularly have to clean lime and rust stains from toilets, sinks, and fixtures. Test a small, hidden area of fixtures prior to using on the whole surface to prevent damage.
Lime-A-Way also makes a gel toilet bowl cleaner that works better than any other toilet bowl cleaner on really tough rust stains and lime
Scott’s Liquid Gold Aerosol
Liquid Gold is an excellent wood cleaner and fixture polish. I use this on wood furniture from time to time to clean and condition. I also use it on brushed nickel and oiled bronze bathroom and kitchen fixtures and door handles. It also does an EXCELLENT job of polishing stainless steel appliances. Liquid Gold spray on stainless steel is it’s best kept secret.
All Natural Distilled White Vinegar
White vinegar is a terrific all purpose cleaner. Uses include laundry, sanitizing counter tops and sinks, greasy surfaces, exhaust fan filters, weed killing, and so much more. Don’t miss my recipe in my book, Get Your House Clean Now: The Home Cleaning Method Anyone Can Master, for an all-purpose household cleaner.
